Exploring New Mexico: A Travel Guide for Art Enthusiasts

Santa Fe

Santa Fe is a small, artisan town with a much bigger personality. Although the airport makes it a challenge to get here quickly or easily, it certainly is worth the drive from either out of town or the Albuquerque airport, which is only an hour away.

Where to Stay

Luxury

BISHOPS LODGE

Nestled in the serene foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Bishop's Lodge continues to captivate visitors with its timeless charm and natural beauty. With its recent refurbishments, Bishop's Lodge now features renovated guest rooms and suites, each thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and relaxation. The onsite restaurant showcases a culinary experience that celebrates local flavors and ingredients, promising a gastronomic journey for guests.

ROSEWOOD INN AT THE ANASAZI

The Rosewood Inn at the Anasazi offers a luxurious retreat with its elegant Southwestern decor and top-notch amenities. Nestled in the heart of downtown Santa Fe, this charming inn provides a peaceful oasis for guests to relax and explore the vibrant local art scene.

Boutique

EL REY COURT

Just down Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe — that is, old Route 66 — lies El Rey Court, an iconic adobe roadside motor court originally built in 1936. Re-imagined + renovated, El Rey provides an inspiring 86 room oasis for the modern traveler. Set on five acres of sprawling old growth gardens, El Rey is a laid back come-as-you-are type of place where everyone is a friend.

Where to Eat

There are a lot of guides to Santa Fe that offer the go-tos of Santa Fe foodies, if you would like this list, drop me a line and I can send you a PDF of that longer list, but I prefer to share a curated list of the lesser known greats in Santa Fe.

BREAKFAST

Mille

Go early and order a ton as the best pastries may only show up once in a while and they sell out fast.

This is a french-owned authentic french creperie and cafe with the best croissants outside of France.

LUNCH

Izunami [at Ten Thousand Waves

When you truly crave a magical, tranquil surrounding while eating lunch, make a reservation at Izunami.

Izanami is upscale izakaya fare [small plates] served in a casual atmosphere with the most extensive selection of premium Japanese sake.

QUICK BITE

The Shake Foundation

If casual fare is more on your mind, I recommend the burgers at The Shake foundation. It is the Shake Shack of Santa Fe.

DRINK

The Bar at Bishop’s Lodge

If you aren’t staying at Bishop’s Lodge, it’s worth the drive out of town to see the wonderful vista, the resort and the amazing cocktail list. I highly recommend the Holy Margarita!

DINNER

La Boca

I highly recommend La Boca, a local Spanish tapas joint, for dinner. Make reservations no matter what day of the week you are headed there. They have expanded to a second location but it still always seems to be packed.
